Dear Colleague,

Please find enclosed the text of the Controls Workshop Bulletin number 2. This now includes a detailed agenda and corrected html references.

Please note that if you are interested in participating you need to register (free of charge) using the form: http://itcowww.cern.ch/ITCO/jcop/JCOPworkshop/registration_form.html and inform me if possible. We are planing to organize an LHCb meeting in the framework of the online regular meetings to discuss the LHCb position concerning the requirements and plans which will be presented at the workshop.

Best regards,

Pere Mato

LHC Experiments Joint Controls Project Workshop, June 3-5, 1998 ---------------------------------------------------------------

Bulletin Number 2

May 5, 1998

Preamble: --------

To reduce duplication of effort in an era of ever decreasing resources, the management of the four LHC experiments have set up a Joint Controls Project in order to prepare the development of the Detector Control Systems (DCS). The aim of the project is first to understand the requirements for control of each experiment, and then to provide suitable solutions. As we are now at an early stage of the project, it has been decided to organize a workshop of interest to all those people within each experiment who have responsibility for slow control or run control. Despite the short time scale, it is considered essential that those concerned have an early opportunity to meet and discuss what they see as the major issues.

More details and up-to-date information is available at: http://itcowww.cern.ch/ITCO/jcop/JCOPworkshop/

Goals: -----

The workshop has two principle aims: (a) to investigate the best practice in the current generation experiments and some of those about to come on-line; and (b) to obtain input from the LHC experiments on what they see as critical issues.

Workshop Format: ---------------

The workshop will take place over a period of three days. Sessions on Day-1 will be taken up by a series of presentations from existing and new experiments and the speakers will be asked to attempt a critical analysis how well the systems work, rather than simply to say what was done. Thirty minutes is foreseen for each talk with fifteen minutes of discussion.

Time is set aside on Day-2 for each LHC experiment to present what they see as technically difficult issues. It is up to the DCS and DAQ coordinators to ensure that the best use is made of this opportunity. It is also anticipated that a session will be available to present the results of the Technology Survey, which covers the state of the art in commercial tools.

The whole of Day-3 has been set aside for discussions on a series of specific topics. Some of these will be identified before the workshop, but others may arise during the first two days. To deal with this eventuality a session is foreseen at the end of Day-2 to finalize the planning for the final day. Each session will be facilitated by a rapporteur. Examples of topics to be covered include connections between DCS and DAQ, use of commercial or home-made tools and so forth.

Adequate time will be set aside for coffee breaks and lunch, when much of the business of a workshop actually takes place.

Venue: -----

The workshop will be held in the CERN Council Chamber. Despite the evident advantages of holding a workshop away from the distractions of CERN, this is precluded by the very tight time scale.

Mobile Telephones: -----------------

Participants with Mobile Telephones are requested to leave them behind or switch them off during the workshop sessions.

Registration: ------------

Please fill out one form per participant and send to Mme. Claudie Nebout, IT/CO Group, CERN.

WWW Form: http://itcowww.cern.ch/ITCO/jcop/JCOPworkshop/registration_form.html EMail Address: FAX +41.22.767 4400

Participants are strongly requested to register before April 30th. We may not be able to help with finding accommodation for participants who register after this date. We also need registration information to prepare badges and handouts, as well as to organize the dinner.
