====================================================
First announcement of the 3rd LHC Computing Workshop
====================================================
The 3rd LHC Computing Workshop will take place in Marseille (France)
from September 28th, 1999 till October 1st 1999. The purpose of this
workshop is to foster discussion between the LHC collaborations and IT
division on the general strategy to adopt for building and using the
LHC software.
The first day of the Workshop will be devoted to the recently approved
Event Filter Farms (EFF) project. Contributions will be enlarged to
other High Performance Computing projects, in High Energy Physics as
well as in other domains.
The programme of the subsequent 3 days will be centered around the
following themes :
- Architecture
     components : the practical approach and status of the different
     experiments
     critical design issues such as treatment of data persistency
- Technology tracking
     networking
     processors, memory, storage
- World wide computing
     the MONARC project
     collaborative tools
     data management
- Simulation
- Analysis tools
     physics analysis tools (commercial and HEP specific)
     the available practical experience
Each session will be organised around an introductory talk given by a
Rapporteur and a large fraction of the sessions will be devoted to
discussion. In order to help the Rapporteur to identify and present
the main issues, contributions will be called for throughout the
community, based on the above themes. A forthcoming bulletin will
announce this call, the deadline of which is fixed for the early July
1999.
More detailed information concerning the programme and practical
details can be found on the Workshop web site at URL
