Please find below Bulletin Number 1 for the second JCOP Workshop.
I apologise to those people who receive several copies due to being on
more than one mailing list.
This message can be forwarded to anyone you know of who may be interested
in LHC experiment controls.
With regards,

                     LHC Experiments Joint Controls Project
                  Second Workshop, JCOP-II, September 6-8, 1999.
                  ---------------------------------------------
                              Bulletin Number 1
                               June 2nd, 1999
Preamble:
--------
To reduce duplication of effort in an era of ever decreasing resources, the
management of the four LHC experiments set up a Joint Controls Project at the
beginning of 1998 in order to prepare the development of the Detector Control
Systems (DCS). The aim of the project includes the understanding of the
requirements for control of each experiment to be followed by the provision
of suitable solutions. The project held a workshop (JCOP-I) at CERN in June
1998 in order: (a) to investigate the best practice in the current generation
experiments and some of those about to come on-line; and (b) to obtain input
from the LHC experiments on what they saw as critical issues. JCOP-I was very
well attended, with almost 140 inscriptions, and the agenda, slides and papers
are available on the Web at the address below.
Relevant Web addresses are:
    Home Page http://itcowww.cern.ch/jcop/
    JCOP-I http://itcowww.cern.ch/jcop/JCOPworkshop1/
    JCOP-II http://itcowww.cern.ch/jcop/JCOPworkshop2/
Goals:
-----
A great deal of work has been done over the previous twelve months, and it is
now time to hold a follow-up workshop so that the experience gained can be
presented and future directions discussed. In particular, this includes the
question of commercial Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
Workshop Format:
---------------
The workshop will take place over a period of three days, from Monday 6th to
Wednesday 8th of September, and follow the format of JCOP-I. Each day will be
divided into four sessions of 90 minutes, with breaks of 30 minutes in the
morning and afternoon and 90 minutes for lunch. In general, 45 minutes will
be allowed for each presentation (30 for the talk and 15 for questions).
A dinner will be held on the evening of the second day. Note also that the
Thursday following the workshop, September 9th, is a holiday in the Canton
of Geneva (Jeune Genevois).
Programme:
---------
The programme is currently in a draft form. However, the aim will be to cover
the topics listed below within the limits of the available time.
JCOP General
Overview of work done since last workshop.
Front-End Control and Middleware
Setting up of Test Bench and facilities available
Experience with using PLCs and Field Buses
(e.g. in ATLAS TRT, CMS B1 Gas, ALICE HMPID, etc.)
Experience with using, and from the evaluation, of OPC
Presentations on current technologies, e.g. Soft PLCs, FireWire, ...
Connection to systems outside the Windows-NT environment
Interface nodes such as WAGO/LMB/AnyBus, sensors, etc.
Controls requirements for High and Low Voltage
SCADA General
Introduction to Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) technology
Brief overview of the SCADA Technology Survey (DO-17331)
(Why are we evaluating SCADA systems and how did we get to the short list)
Demonstration of a typical SCADA System
Engineering Issues (a SCADA system by itself is only a start)
Discuss (in general terms) licensing terms and tendering procedure.
SCADA Technical Evaluation
   Questions of:
Scalability, Openness (API, etc.), Partitioning, Hierarchy,
         Multi-user access, Multi-user/multi-location development.
Connectivity to other software (e.g. via DCOM) and drivers, etc.
Dealing with experiment-specific items such as DAQ parameter loading
Possible demonstration of actual implementations (B1 gas or HMPID, etc.).
(We should deal with at least all Priority 1 evaluation items.)
Comparison of all systems under review
Experiments
Changes and progress in the field of controls since the first workshop
Views on how each LHC experiment sees the future
Common Services
Report on progress of Data Exchange Working Group.
   Collaboration with Gas Working Group.
Safety Issues (connection between controls and safety systems)?
Conclusions
Summary of Front-End and Middleware talks
   Summary of SCADA talks
General debate on future directions and summary of concerns.
Venue:
-----
The workshop will be held in the CERN Council Chamber. Despite the evident
advantages of holding a workshop away from the distractions of CERN, this
proved to work well for JCOP-I.
Accommodation:
-------------
We shall block-book as many rooms as possible at the CERN Hostel and they
will be allocated on a "first-come first-served"basis". We can also help in
reserving rooms in local hotels if given sufficient warning.
Workshop Dinner:
---------------
We shall organize a dinner on the Tuesday evening (7th). We do not yet have
a firm price, but will aim for 60CHF/person. A coach will be made available
for transportation between CERN and the restaurant. Please indicate whether
you wish to attend this function when registering. We need a FIRM commitment
from participants in order to reserve sufficient space in the restaurant.
Workshop Fees:
-------------
There will be no charge made for participation at the workshop apart from
for the (optional) dinner.
Meals:
-----
Tea and/or coffee will be served outside the Council Chamber during breaks at
no charge. Participants may purchase their own lunch in the CERN Restaurant #1
(in the same building).
Mobile Telephones:
-----------------
Participants with Mobile Telephones are requested to switch them off during
the workshop sessions.
Registration:
------------
Please fill out one form per participant at the Web address
 http://itcowww.cern.ch/jcop/JCOPworkshop2/Registration/registration_form.html
Use of the Web for registration saves us a lot of work. However, if
anyone does not have Web access they can fill out the form below and
send it to Mme. Claudie Nebout, IT/CO Group, CERN:
 EMail: <Claudie.Nebout@cern.ch>
 FAX: +41.22.767 4400
Participants are strongly requested to register before July 31st.
We may not be able to help with finding accommodation for participants who
register after this date. We also need registration information to prepare
badges and handouts, as well as to organize the dinner.
  * Please note that the workshop is organized primarily for members *
  * of the four LHC experiments as well as interested members of the *
  * accelerator community. It is not open to employees of industrial *
  *  companies.                                                       *
                                                             David Myers, V-2
