Radiation Protection Courses

A Radiation Protection safety course is given at CERN to provide adequate training to all persons whose work may encounter ionizing radiation, in accordance to CERN Safety Rules.

This half-a-day course is given in a classroom, with a brief evaluation session at the end of the presentation.

There are sessions of the course every week. It is possible to follow it in English or in French.

You can find details on the course from the HSE web page.

Note that this course in MANDATORY for all persons who need a personal dosimeter:

  • To access the LHCb underground areas when the accelerator will start operation you will need to have a personal dosimeter (see here on how to obtain it). New dosimeters and renewal will be given only to people having followed the course.

The transparencies of the course are available as EDMS no. 886017 (in English) and EMDS no. 888046 (in French). The Radiation Safety Manual (a.k.a. Code F, EMDS no. 335729) is available from the RP group web page with all CERN Safety Rules.

Calendar and enrolment for regular Radiation Protection Courses

Regular sessions of the Radiation Protection Course are given every week in either English or French.

To see the dates for future sessions and register to one of the next available sessions use the following link:

        https://cta.cern.ch/cta2/f?p=110:9:373381967991850::NO::X_LANGUAGE:EN

and click on Safety on the Menu and then Radiological Protection, finally on Radiological Protection or Securite Radiologique to select the course in English or French in the scroll down menu. Once you click on Sign Up in EDH to register, specify "LHCb experiment" in the additional information and if you have time constraints explain them and also send a mail to the course responsible (her name and phone is on the registration page)

If you are asked for a username/password (same as your NICE account), once you have given it re-enter the link and you will be forwarded to the "Radiological Protection" course page directly.

You will need a "AIS signature password" to confirm your registration: make sure you have one, if you don't know it ask the LHCb secretariat how to obtain one.

You will receive an invitation by e-mail for a specific session with time and location.

Please confirm if you will be able to attend, so that someone else can take your place if that is not the case.

If you do not receive an invitation e-mail it means your enrolment did not go through (e.g. the date you asked for is full).

The course will be complemented later on by a short LHCb-specific training session regarding radiological risks and procedures in the experiment. We are preparing this part.

Special sessions for LHCb

Special sessions for LHCb collaborators may be reserved/organized if required. Please let the LHCb secretariat know if you are interested in having such a session.
