The next EP Technical Forum will take place on Wednesday, 23 June 1999
at
14:00 in bldg. 40-S2-B01.
Topic : Evolution of the policy concerning the Electronics Pool.
Objective : As a consequence of pressures on the Division's budget and
the
projected decline in CERN staff numbers, the EP management believes
that the
policy concerning the services provided by the CERN Electronics Pool
should be
reviewed and updated. At the same time there is an evolution away from
the
past environment, which consisted of multiple small short-term
experiments
(for which the model of the pool was originally conceived). Instead we
will
have a few, very large experiments with life-times that are comparable
with,
or exceed, the useful life-time of at least some of the electronic
equipment.
The Advisory Committee for Electronics Services (ACES) is proposing an
evolution of the policy concerning the Electronic Pool (investment,
organization,
manpower, charging policy etc.). In this Technical Forum, the past
evolution of
the pool policy will be briefly recalled, the guidelines and constraints
set
out by
Management for the revision of the policy will be summarized, and the
proposals
of the ACES working group will be presented. The current point of view
of the LHC
experiments with respect to their future requirements for equipment,
support
and services from the Electronics Pool will be presented.
It is hoped that a lively debate will provide ACES and EP management
with
valuable input to help formulating the inevitable future adjustments to
the
policy concerning the support and services that can be offered to the
community by the Electronics Pool.
AGENDA :
- Introduction
(past policy, constraints on future policy, etc.)
  Speaker: A. Fucci.
- Overview of the pool and evolution for the future.
      (Budget situation, equipment invesment policy,
projected evolution of demand, evolution of human resources,
proposal to modulate the rental charge policy, etc.).
  Speaker: J.-P.Vanuxem
- The user's viewpoint on the future role of the
Electronics Pool in providing equipment, support and
services for large LHC experiments (ATLAS/CMS).
  Speaker: V. Vuillemin
- Discussion
