Some people at CERN may have to work in
supervised or controlled radiation areas, or may be involved in
activities involving the use of radioactive sources. The dose
received by individuals working with ionizing radiation at CERN
is monitored with personal dosimeters.
Every person working at CERN in
supervised or controlled radiation areas or with radioactive
sources and materials MUST wear a CERN dosimeter.
The general policy is to provide
dosimeters only to the people that need one.
Since the Sector Beam
Tests on October 23rd the LHCb underground areas (both the
accessible area UX85A and the experimental area
UX85B) are classified as
Radiological Areas. For this reason it is necessary to have a
personal dosimeter when accessing them.
A list of people with LHCb as primary
experiment with a DIS as exctracted from the Dosimetry Service
database is available to the LHCb RP personel. Contact them if
you need to consult it.
The list of people that will need a
dosimeter at the startup of 2009 is being prepared with
information from the operation, online, subdetector operation
coordinators and the safety personel. The name of people that
don't yet have a dosimeter and will need one will be transmitted
to the RP dosimetry service. Only people in the LHCb
dosimetry list will get one from the dosimetry service.
If you do not have a dosimeter and think
you need one you should make sure you are on the list the
Dosimetry Service has of people that need it:
- Verify if you are in the LHCb
dosimetry list with the
LHCb RSO.
The list
with the people needing it for the 2009-2010 operation is in
preparation. People on the list will be notified directly as
soon as the list is transmitted to the Dosimetry Service.
- If you are in the list move to
point 2
- People not in the LHCb
dosimetry list need to
- Ask to be included in the
list by sending a mail to the RSO (click
here)
stating
- the reason they need a
dosimeter (eg. on shift, piquet, use of
radioactive sources)
- if the reason is
associated to a detector, service or project,
say which one it is and carbon copy the person responsible
for that detector operations of
the request
- if the reason is
general shift ensure that they are
registered in the shift database
- They will receive a notification once their name has been forwarded to the
Dosimetry Service
Once they know
they are on the list to
get a dosimeter and the
Dosimetry Service has been informed:
- Make sure to have followed the Radiological
Protection course
- see on the
dedicated page for details on course schedule
and registration
- Ensure to have a valid medical
certificate (not necessary for temporary dosimeters)
- Go to the Dosimetry Service
to pick it up. If they have not yet done the biometric
identification it will be done at the same time
- see on the
Dosimetry Service web site for details on
opening hours
- see on the
dedicated page for information on general
safety courses, access authorization and biometric
identification
- you can check
here
your access authorizations
People with a personal dosimeter are required to read
it out at least once a month, normally during the first
week.
A reader is available at Point8 just
before the Access to the underground.
For LHCb people that are not at CERN for more than one
month and are not able to do so,
a service is provided by the secretariat.
They will also need to exchange their
dosimeter once a year, the Dosimetry Service will contact them
when it will be necessary to do so.
Note that:
- If required by the home institute, a
person regularly monitored at CERN (not a short-term
visitor) can obtain a Radiation Passport (a document
asserting that the person is monitored and reporting the
previous annual doses received by the individual) from the
Individual Dosimetry Service.
- People with a CERN contract carrying
out experiments and tests in radiation areas not at CERN but
in other laboratories should obtain their individual
dosimeter by the host institute and then ask that the dose
received be communicated to the CERN Individual Dosimetry
Service.
Once you do not need a dosimeter any
longer you are requested to
- return it to the dosimetry service
- inform the LHCb RSO (click
here)

dosimeters at CERN, how to contact the Dosimetry service,
location and opening hours of the service refer to the SC/RP
